Exploring Avila Beach: A Perfect Getaway with Friends (206)

We returned to Avila Beach, CA in September with our good friends, Phil and Debbie. We booked the trip when we were here last year (I’ll add a link to that trip at the end of the post) because we enjoyed the area so much, and we had a few more excursions we wanted to do together. Here we are perched on the hillside overlooking San Luis Bay. We are on the left and Phil and Debbie are on the right.

Flying Flags Avila Beach is a great base to explore the area, but we also enjoy sitting around the gas fire pit in the evenings.

Walking Lucy, our terrier, in the morning treats me to beautiful scenes like this, as the sun rises over the hills, casting a golden light over the bay.

A short drive or bike ride away is Pismo Beach, with its iconic sign.

We enjoy taking our time to walk to the end of the pier,

while watching the surfers in the water. The surf was pretty mild, unfortunately, but you can see the surfers along the break for about a mile.

A walk on the beach is next. There were a lot of clams on the beach this year….

By then, we are all hungry so we visited Brads for a delicious lunch.

Sometimes (more than we should) we stop by Old West Cinnamon Rolls for a fresh roll with cream cheese icing. IMHO, their fresh cinnamon rolls are still the best!

Phil got a photo of the kitchen making the next batch of rolls. It’s quite a production!

We also enjoy bike rides to Avila Beach, or along the Bob Jones trail to Pismo Beach.

Back at the RV Park, Phil helped me fix a nagging problem with the pantry door. It works perfect now!

Being an industrious guy, he also made some pretty amazing smash burgers for dinner. The thinly sliced onions on top gave the burgers a great flavor.

We stayed an entire week, so we fit in a few additional excursions. One was to the Great American Melodrama. It’s great family fun and we try to see a show when we are in the area.

The Avila Barn is a great stop for anything related to produce, pies or the kitchen.

And the Hartford Pier is a nice walk from the RV park. We enjoy watching the sea lions on the barge tied up next to the pier.

The views from the pier looking back at Avila and Pismo are pretty amazing.

Our last excursion was to Sensorio in Paso Robles. It makes for a fun evening. We get there just before the sun sets. The lights look like a field of dandelions ready to lose their petals. The lights are powered by solar and are actually always on, but you can’t see them during the day.

After the sun sets, you see a hint of color and gradually the whole field is lighted in different colors. It’s really beautiful, and you feel like you are in a dreamscape.

Sensorio has a few other exhibits. I really enjoyed this one.

The geodesic objects glow and change colors, and some spin. It was fun walking among the objects and taking it in.

A week goes by like a flash, and it’s time to go home. But not before enjoying the view one last time.

We really enjoyed spending some time with our friends here, and hope to make it back again for the umpteenth time, but it looks like it will have to be in 2027, as our calendar for 2026 is already full.

We are looking forward to a year of revisiting favorite places and enjoying a few new destinations.
