Oceanfront at Pillar Point (205)

We have always wanted to stay here at Pillar Point RV Park, but the ocean front sites were always full! We were happy to see a site open in August, so off we went off to Pillar Point!

To the right of our rig is the harbor, and to the left is Surfer’s Beach. Off the coast is where the famous Mavericks surfing contest takes place, with waves up to 25 to 60 feet tall! On this trip, the ocean was really calm.

It was really enjoyable to just sit outside and gaze at the ocean.

Of course, we could also just sit inside and do the same. For this trip, I kept the seats facing forward to optimize our ocean view.

Wherever we chose to sit, it was a beautiful view.

There was also entertainment! The pelicans put on several great shows for us as they dive-bombed the plentiful anchovies in the water. I still don’t understand how the pelicans kept from colliding mid-air.

A short walk to our right is Sam’s Chowder House, a favorite of ours. It was nice not having to find a parking space this time!

The food was as good as ever. A little further down are Half Moon Bay Brewing Company and Barbara’s Fishtrap, both good places to eat. While there we also enjoyed walking for coffee to The Press, just across Highway 1.

If you prefer to cook for yourself, you can get fresh fish at the harbor at Johnson Pier, caught that morning.

We did a lot of walking this trip, to enjoy the sunshine and the abundant wildlife.

But we also took our bikes so we could enjoy the bike trails that extend past the state park to the south.

You get a beautiful view of the coast from here.

This guy let Debbie get real close for a photo.

We really enjoyed this trip to Pilar Point and plan a return trip next year.

If you love the ocean, walking trails, and biking, this is a good place to stay.

What are the downsides? The sites tend to be expensive, and it’s basically a parking lot. Also, large rigs may have trouble maneuvering into their space. Otherwise, enjoy the view!

Here Lucy is all tuckered out from chasing the birds and decided to lay down with her blankie and heating pad. 🙂

  1. Your dog looks right at home. Your pictures are really nice. I’d like to go there sometime. Our roads in the Bay Area are treacherous to get to the ocean and there’s always construction somewhere. The food looks tasty. September is always a good month by the ocean but it’s probably full. My Sister is in Carmel Valley and there seems to be no slow time anymore. I lived in Monterey and PG for half my life and loved it. Thanks for the posting! Drew

    1. Thanks rvnonsense! We also live the Monterey area too! Probably the best route from here to there is just up Highway 1. There may be some conjecturing at Capitola and going through Santa Cruz, but from Santa Cruz to Hal Moon Bay is one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the country.
