We completed the Cascade Loop in Anacortes, WA. This is a beautiful little town located on Fidalgo Island. Many people start their visit through the San Juan Islands from the ferry terminal here.
We stayed on the east side of the island at the Pioneer Trails RV Park, a good place to setup base camp for the week. It is well maintained and had large sites.
We spent most of the days visiting with relatives (since we had already quarantined with them), or visiting the marina and downtown.
Cabanas on the marina has a simple but good menu, and the view is great.
Also convenient is the nearby Lopez Island Ice Cream Stand for dessert.
Anacortes is also great for bicycling. On most days, I was able to get a good ride in.
My favorite is on the Tommy Thompson Trail through the marina,
and up to the top of Cap Sante.
The view is great, and the hills make for a good workout.
Kayaking is also great on the island. We looked forward to kayaking in Bowman Bay, near Deception Pass.
I’ve outlined our path here, staying inside the bay and avoiding the treacherous currents leading to Deception Pass.
The views were awesome.
We thought this empty dock would be a nice place for lunch.
After Debbie and I finished, Chuck (Deb’s brother) and I paddled around the bay again. Chuck is the one who first got me interested in kayaking.
There is something magical about gliding along the water making hardly a sound. You can enjoy nature on a different level when kayaking.
Bowman Bay is now one of my favorite kayaking spots. 🙂

Well, after a week in Anacortes, it was time to say goodbye and head to the Oregon Coast and explore Astoria and Seaside.
