Half Moon Bay RV Trip #32

April 27, 2015

One thing I love about having an RV is that we can enjoy camping even when the weather unexpectantly changes to cold, windy and rainy. When we were last at Half Moon Bay State Beach the skies were clear and the weather was great, and you can read about that trip here.

This time, the winds picked up (20+ mph), the temperatures dropped (highs in the 50’s), and we even got some much needed rain overnight. No problem! We had a great spot overlooking the ocean, and we spent the weekend catching up on reading, playing the guitar, listening to music, and playing board games.

Our wonderful view...

Our wonderful view…

OK, these pictures make it look a lot more warm and sunny than it actually was…trust me…cold, windy, rainy! 🙂 While we did venture outside several times to walk the dog or go into town for coffee and shopping, we thoroughly enjoyed the downtime and never tired of watching the surf and the beautiful view.

On the plus side, most of the sites in the park have been upgraded with electricity (20/30/50).

This makes Half Moon Bay State Beach a real gem, with several ocean front sites, walking distance to a very nice downtown, bikes paths that parallel the shore for miles, and an easy drive into San Francisco for a day of site seeing. A few places to visit while in downtown Half Moon Bay include Moonside Bakery for pastries, coffee…and pizza. While we were there, a group of locals were playing Irish music in the courtyard. Also, Oddyssea is a great little shop of interesting edutainment items.

The owner encourages you to pick up, play with, and explore anything in the store! They also have a unique outside area with great activities for kids and parents. We also enjoy the organic prepared foods at New Leaf Market, and the farms that stretch along highway 92, where you can buy anything from flowers and fresh produce, to carnivorous plants, to metal dinosaur sculptures. You are also close to Pillar point, where the world famous Mavericks surfing tournament is held. As you can see, there is plenty to keep you interested when you camp at Half Moon Bay!

  1. Looks like a beautiful spot to enjoy regardless of the weather. We may have to check it out sometime if we ever make it to CA.

  2. It’s a beautiful place to visit…even better once we are finally out of the drought!

Wonderful photos! So many new shops on Main St.

Have you ever been to the San Gregorio General store? Only a few miles South on Hwy 1. Great book store, clothing, housewares, and bar. Used to have live music on Saturdays and Sundays. Nice woodstove keeps everyone toasty warm on those Coastal fog and rainy days.

  4. I have seen the store, but have yet to stop. On our next trip in the area, I’ll make a point to visit. Thanks for the tip!

  5. What a great spot you found. You make it look and sound very inviting.

  6. Yes, HMB is our favorite place to visit for a weekend, as long as we can reserve an ocean front site.
